Trust us—you don't need to be a professional to re-create these. But having one (or a few) on hand can't hurt, so we asked several expert stylists for their advice. There’s something extremely romantic about braided curly hair, isn’t there?

Fishtail over the shoulder for spring and summer fun

Then, split each half into half again to create four sections. Split your hair in half to separate it into a top and a bottom section. Experiment with these timeless and graceful hairdos that are perfect for every occasion. A perfectly coiled and braided (and giant) chignon to trump all chignons. Soft and fuzzy, Ramirez's halo braid isn't a feat of magic, but the result of gently tugging and pulling each section of the braid for an undone feel. Remix a sleek low pony with a center braid, which evidently will steal the show.

It’s advised to use good quality curly extensions and to also maintain them with water and conditioner spray to avoid bad tangling. Long cornrow braids involve parting the hair into any cornrow pattern and making braids very close to the scalp with long ends. Long cornrow braids can be made several ways, including straight backs, a braided updo, or lemonade braids. This feed-in style sees braids all around the head coming together into a high ponytail. To change up the three-dimensional style, try wearing the hair in a high bun, instead. The key to this hairstyle is loads of texture—whether you're working with natural curls, adding an artificial wave, or simply loading up on sea salt spray.

Now, here’s another style that lets you sport that elusive fishtail braid, without actually making you go through all that trouble. It makes use of repeatedly topsy tailing sections of your hair to create the illusion of a fishtail braid. Honestly, I’ve watched so many tutorials for crown braids and I can safely say that they are a pain in the you-know-where to do. So here’s a super easy way to get that pretty crown braid look without going crazy!

Keke Palmer looks straight out of Studio 54 with these fluffy waves. And her layers start at the brow, creating a look that mimics bangs but doesn't require quite the commitment. You might've seen that headbands are back in business, but we also love the look digital influencer and model Linh Dang Khanh Nguyen created using a headscarf. Step it up a notch by adding a stretchy headband to the top of the head, as seen here.

Long braids for men usually don’t require much, if any, braiding hair. Small pieces of braiding hair can be added just to give some additional length. Long braids for men don’t have to be excessively long as it’s more of a natural look.

Modernize your go-to Dutch braids by leaving their ends undone and using strands of hair to secure the plaits instead of hair ties. A new take on the half-up, half-down look, it lets your balayage tresses flow. Two side twists with a jumbo Dutch braid in the middle are the perfect trio for a romantic updo. Boosting that charming allure, the heart-shaped hairpiece ties the look together.

It is great for online meetings as well if I need to pull my side bangs back”. Just create three super-loose and teased French braids, than wrap the ends together into a tiny bun. Summer is here, which means protective styles with minimal upkeep will save you so much time. Union's straight-back box braids are one of those no-brainer braided styles you can keep going back to. This braided take on the classic ballerina bun combines the colorful bobby pin idea from #2 with an updo.

Try a French braid on one side of your head and adding into a low ponytail for a new look. Amp up the sophistication by wrapping a strand of hair over the hair tie to conceal your work. This look is literally easy enough to complete in two subway stops (if that). To recreate this look, simply create a loose three-strand braid and secure the end with a hair tie. Here is another side braid for long hair but this one is a fishtail braid.

Easy Braids for Long Hair to Up Your Game in No Time

First, you’ll need to get your hair wavy and create several types of braids that you will mix and integrate into the hairstyle. Knot your locks here and there and use tiny flowers for decoration. We hardly ever see singer Ariana Grande without her signature high and long ponytail hairstyle. But when she does change it, she opts for other cool braid hairstyles for long hair. For example, here she is with a pair of braided space buns in a half-up, half-down hairstyle.

Rapunzel Braided Ponytail

This one can be traditionally braided or feature an intricate braid. Just gather hair at one side before braiding it, taking care not to make it too tight. Exuding boho-chic vibes, this wavy hairstyle is a free spirit’s dream. Loose French braids really pop with highlights woven throughout. The coif’s rose gold hues finish it with delicious warmth and ample personality.

Knotted Messy Side Braid

A fishtail braid looks just as beautiful loose, touselled and weaved into an updo. Add dainty hair accessories to complete the fairy-inspired look. Not to worry – this cute look can be put together in no time at all. Just make a loose three-strand braid and tie it with a bobble. Another easy braid style every girl with long hair should covet? Channel your inner Elsa with long braided hair with a lot of teasing.

Basically, no one can resist the beauty of braids, especially when they're creative. Not everyone has the patience or time to sit for long braids, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have them! The best hairstyle option for people on a time-crunch is crochet long braids.

Sometimes, all you need to spice up your braid style is just a splash of color! Long box braids with color is a great way to switch up your regular box braids. These long, vibrant braids can be done using any one color or combination of colors of braiding hair to make long box braids. Two or more colors can be mixed in whichever pattern or combination you desire. Long knotless braids are created by first parting the hair into the desired part shape. Long knotless braids are relatively lightweight and flexible without putting too much tension on the scalp.

A bow by any other name is still a bow, but tie it around soft, segmented French braid, and it becomes decidedly less elementary. This gorgeous twist looks complicated, but we promise it's not. Not a fan of the standard pigtails and looking for something a little funkier? Tessa Thompson makes the case for a mature version of pigtail plaits. This look is similar to #7 (you can get it following essentially the same steps) with a slightly lower placement on the scalp and longer braids.

The Fishtail Crown Braid Hairstyles for Long Hair

Crown braids are a natural and organic way of embellishing your hair without having to wear any extra accessories. Obviously, you can sport any type of braid, but a fishtail is usually preferred for its visual effect. Also, in case you did not know, braids are among the oldest hairstyles in human history. Want to manage the frame of an undercut, without giving up your long, thick hair? They provide the same cool look of a side shave while you can still show off your femininity.

Rope Twist

In general, braids that end with a voluminous long pony appear very sophisticated. You may also save some time on styling when combining braids with ponytails. You won't need to braid your locks all the way down, hence spending minutes on a gorgeous look. Yet, should you decide to take it to the next level, you can turn your pony into a ladder braid.

Extra long braids can be done in any single color, combination of colors, or ombré colors. For a totally unique and different side braid hairstyle, try this one out! It’s much easier than it looks and won’t take more than ten minutes to achieve.

We know this braid might look complicated to create but it’s not, we promise! If you’ve got your French or Dutch braid mastered, just flip your head over and start the braid from the nape of the neck and work your way up. Once you get to right before your head ends, tie it off and then gather the rest into a messy top knot. Great for festivals, poolside parties, and just general chillaxing, this no-brainer of a braid can live solo or in multiples around your head. Seal the ends of these tiny braids with a quick mist of hairspray to secure the ends without bothering with a hair tie. Like #5, this is one of those braids you can do while half paying attention, but you need to take this a bit higher on your head.

This super chunky double layering of braids for long hair is a great casual choice for those with thick hair who want to amp things up a little. It’s messy, effortles and just perfect for both day-to-day looks and special events. When it comes to braids for long hair, easy and elegant should be top criteria.

Best Overall: Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer

Regardless, it's essential to thoroughly wash your hair with cold water and a color-safe shampoo and conditioner, rinsing until the water runs clear, and there's no product residue. Try painting along the part of your hair or somewhere you can clearly see in the mirror, Huerta suggests. She and Zais also suggest grabbing a friend to help with the parts of your head you can't see. If you do have long hair, "paint in a downward direction to prevent the long strands from moving and smearing your design," says Bieber.

Cold, ashy, gray, and washed-out — which, might we remind you, bears little resemblance to the true bronzy tones of an actual mushroom. “Mushroom hair started out as drastic and bold, but it’s landing in a much more wearable place for 2024,” says Dean. If you’re working with brunette hair and aren’t quite ready to hit the full bottle of bleach, Richards recommends asking your stylist for subtle buttercream babylights instead.

This is a particularly good hair dryer for those who want something that doesn't sound like a jet engine taking off in your bathroom. According to Dyson, the Supersonic measures 79 decibels on average and emits less noise than the average hair dryer. London-based artist Janina Zais isn't opposed to paintbrushes or finger painting, but she also likes to employ stencils or even airbrushing. "With a lot of designs, I try to capture the innocence and naivety of making art as a child, so precision isn't necessary," she says. Unfortunately, if anyone in the wedding party arrives more than 15 minutes late, we may not be able to perform their full service depending on the stylist’s following appointments. Because it does walk the line between punk and mullet, you'll need a trim to maintain the length every six to eight weeks, she adds. If you're having trouble landing on the perfect pixie, think about your natural texture and work with, not against, it. While you’ll need trims about every six weeks to maintain the shape of the cut, a pixie should be low maintenance to style day-to-day. House Cleaning Prices Average House Cleaning Cost

house cleaning charges

Before hiring a company, check to see what their routine cleaning includes and look at their add-on services. You may find it helpful to know the price to clean a house based on how many bedrooms are in the home. Some companies will have a rate that they charge per bedroom, other companies might want to charge extra to clean a bedroom. If your state requires you to collect sales tax, include it in your estimate.

How to save money on house cleaning services

We’ll break down everything you need to know when deciding how much to charge for cleaning a house. Move-in or move-out cleaning costs $150 to $500, depending on the home size. A move-out cleaning is essential when selling your home or to get your rent deposit back. On top of a deep clean, move-out cleaning may include other services like cleaning out kitchen appliances, cleaning kitchen cabinets, and polishing floors. On average, apartment cleaning prices range from $75 to $135, depending on the number of bedrooms and bathrooms.

Bathroom Cleaning

house cleaning charges

Individual cleaners may expect a 10-15% tip but the customer should decide based on quality of service. It's also better for the health of the cleaners who work directly with the products every day. You may pay slightly higher prices if you opt to work with a company that is solely green or that offers green products as an option. Some inhabitants tend to make more messes than others, and that can increase the cost of cleaning, Franco says. A cleaner may up their price for cleaning homes with animals or small children, for example, because they expect they’ll need to budget more time to clean up the extra pet hair or splatters.

How to Find a Good House Cleaner

One useful tool that can help in pricing is a cleaning cost calculator. Using a cleaning cost calculator can help you provide more accurate quotes to your clients and ensure that you are charging a fair and competitive price for your services. Before determining a charge, several house cleaning services need a walk-through. A walk-through will help you to assess the condition of a property. The charge should be greater for residences that would require more than a regular cleaning. Molly Maid costs $60 to $100 per hour per team of two to three maids for monthly, one-time, and initial cleanings.

What is included in a basic house cleaning?

Deep cleaning includes removing all books from shelves for deep dusting, cleaning light fixtures, floors, and polishing wood. To reduce the cost, organizing your desk and work area speeds up the process. If you decide to charge $30.00 an hour, multiply the time it takes to clean the house by your rate.

By Number of Bedrooms

For companies that charge per square foot, it is usually between $0.16 to $0.22. If you have buildup on the outside of your home, power washing is an excellent option for you to remove the grime. Secondly, as mentioned before, extras such as doing dishes or changing bedding can alter cleaning service prices. Overhead costs are anything that is an employee-related cost but not part of the job itself.

$120 – $280 Average total cost per cleaning

If you earn less than $25 per hour, it's more cost-effective to clean the home yourself. House cleaning services typically cost more in major cities and areas with a high cost of living. Hiring a full-time maid costs $18,000 to $35,000 per year or $1,500 to $2,700 per month. Full-time maids perform cleaning, grocery shopping, cooking, running errands, and additional responsibilities negotiated when hiring.

In those instances, she says they have to bump up their rates, which can get awkward for everyone involved. Thirdly, if a client has their own supplies for your use, your rate will need to be adjusted. Nick spent 10 years in print journalism before landing in digital publishing within the home improvement space.

Carpet Cleaning Prices

You can agree to a set number of hours needed to clean your home with an individual cleaner or a cleaning company. Bathrooms can require more cleaning or specialized cleaning, depending on their conditions, so professional cleaners will adjust their rates based on the number of bathrooms in your home. They will consider both full bathrooms, half baths and three-quarter baths when preparing a quote or putting together an invoice of their cleaning services. The number of bathrooms will increase your home cleaning price because bathrooms are dirtier and require more effort to clean than other parts of your home. Companies are generally more structured — with a team of cleaners and its own liability insurance, for example — but they also tend to be more expensive. The bigger and dirtier your home, the more you’ll pay for a cleaning, says Marcos Franco, owner of Mighty Clean Home Roswell in Roswell, Georgia. Larger homes or homes that haven’t been cleaned in a while take more work and require more supplies, and that drives up the total price of a cleaning. Wondering what a house cleaner or housekeeper is going to cost you?

Some cleaning companies charge more for additional bathrooms than they do for additional bedrooms. The number of bedrooms you have in your house will play a role in determining cleaning costs. If your cleaning company bases their rates on number of rooms, rather than square footage, your room count matters. Even if your place is only 800 square feet, your cleaning costs will vary depending on whether it's a studio apartment or a two-bedroom house. To estimate what your home might cost, take the square footage and multiply by the price per square foot range. This will give you the estimated dollar amount to expect for a standard or deep house cleaning service.

House Cleaning Cost: Prices for Popular Cleaning Services

Bedrooms are frequently given a light service and require little time, around 10 to 20 minutes. Light tasks consist of light dusting, emptying wastebaskets, cleaning windows, and the floor. Deeper tasks include cleaning light fixtures, dusting baseboards, polishing wood, removing stains from carpet, and cleaning under furniture. When writing a cleaning service quote, be sure to include a detailed list of services, the frequency of cleaning, and any additional or specialized services. You’ll also want to think about the type of space, its size, the level of cleaning required, and any specific client requests. Some cleaning companies may charge by the number of rooms, typically $30 to $50 per room (bed or bathroom).

Bedroom

The bigger your home and the more cluttered or challenging it is to clean, the more you will be charged per square foot. In areas such as San Francisco, CA, or New York City, the cost of living will be higher. You will find a lower cost of living in more rural areas of the country.

What are the key factors that influence house cleaning service pricing?

The table below shows the average cost for each unique situation. This allows you to design the service that you are hiring to fit your specific needs. Perhaps you do not care to have your couch vacuumed, but you do want to make sure your windows are cleaned. You can pick and choose your services with a company that charges an hourly rate.

Per-Room House Cleaning Rates

Event cleaning usually falls under the commercial cleaning umbrella and has a national average cost of $200, according to Safe and Sanitary Homes. Smaller events can cost between $80 and $100, while bigger events can cost between $450 and $880, according to Safe and Sanitary Homes. Solar for All will deliver on the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to creating high-quality jobs with the free and fair choice to join a union for workers across the United States. This $7 billion investment in clean energy will generate an estimated 200,000 jobs across the country. There are various types of cleaning services, each with its own pricing considerations.

How much does it cost for a deep house cleaning?

Alternatively, people may be unaware of how long a professional cleaning operation takes. Cleaning firms will need the most precise and up-to-date information in order to be paid fairly and accurately. And if you aren’t sure where to begin, check out Care’s house cleaning rates calculator to get you started. Maids charge $130 to $320 to clean a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home. Standard cleaning services include the kitchen, living room, dining room, hallway, and stairs. Laundry, wood polishing, and gutter cleaning are some other add-ons that make life a little easier for busy families.

A 2,000 square foot house costs $110 to $320 to clean, while a 3,000 sqft home runs $150 to $380. Some house cleaning services require a walk-through before setting a rate. A walk-through will allow you to see what the state of a home is. For homes that will need more than a standard cleaning, the rate should be higher.

Also, the more bathrooms a home has, the more expensive it will be to clean due to the products and labor required to sanitize each bathroom properly. The table below shows average prices for houses of varying sizes. The prices are based on the number of bedrooms and bathrooms in the home. The price you pay to have your house cleaned depends on how often you hire those services.

For example, you might want to use unique pricing forms for weekly, biweekly, and monthly cleanings. Individual pricing forms can also come in handy for move-out cleans and deep cleanings. Expect to pay on the higher end if your chimney is in bad condition. Creosote buildup will make it more difficult to clean than usual and will be a factor that determines the overall cost. If any dead or living critters have taken up residence in your chimney, then expect to pay more for that too. Depending on the difficulty of cleaning, the price of the task will vary.

After looking at different cleaning services prices, we see that the national average of house cleaning rates per hour is $25 to $90. Of course, this is just an average, and some businesses charge more per hour based on location. Determining What To Charge For House Cleaning Services is a critical aspect of running a successful cleaning business. Pricing impacts not only your profitability but also your competitiveness in the market. There are different pricing structures that cleaning businesses can adopt, including charging an hourly rate, a flat fee, per square foot, or per room.

They can handle major cleaning situations to prepare for special events. Because most services use professional quality products, your home is cleaner and safer after professional cleaning. You do not need to worry about damaging your furniture or belongings by using the wrong cleaning solution if you were to do it yourself.

Some clients prefer that certain products are used and may need to either pay extra or provide the products themselves. Determining the average cost of house cleaning includes the consideration of factors such as extra bathrooms, pets, and other add-on services. Pets generally increase the cost of a cleaning automatically, but add-on services such as gutter cleaning are optional. A deep clean usually requires more time and chemicals and hits more areas than a routine maid service. Get your carpet deep cleaned at least once a year, more if you have heavy foot traffic. You can do this task yourself to save some money, but avoid these carpet cleaning mistakes.

The Hair Painting Trend Is Our Kind of Modern Art

The main difference (aside from the diet of puff pastry and champagne) is its page-boy length — just a tad shorter than your average bob, usually ending somewhere between the jaw and ear lobe. "It can be worn in endlessly different ways," says Saviano, but he really likes this flirty length with the addition of short bangs. To achieve it, comb a generous amount of volumizing mousse (Toth likes the Kérastase Mousse Bouffante Hair Mousse) from your roots to your ends, blowdry your hair with a diffuser attachment, and set it in place with a hairspray. Here at Allure, it is our goal and misson to provide each and every guest with first-class experience. Full Head Highlight $160

"This look is best for someone with afro-textured hair who is considering the big chop," says Lindsey of this easy look on Amandla Stenberg. "If you don’t want to fuss with heating tools, this is the perfect look." A great leave-in conditioner, like Bread Beauty Supply Hair-Cream, is key to making this short look feel soft and healthy. “The beauty and popularity of true mushroom brown is that it’s inspired by the range of browns we’re naturally born with,” says Richards. Because the shade toes the line between warm and cool, it can work with virtually all skin tones and undertones, whether you go for a single-process shade or mushroom-brown highlights. Just note that a true neutral bronde tone is tricky to maintain in summer months due to sunlight oxidation, says Richards.

The whisper-thin pieces gave us the lift we'd desired—and we left with more than we'd paid for. When we heard that this popular Beverly Hills salon had introduced a quickie-color menu, we booked an appointment, hoping to give our flat, dark hair a subtle boost. To avoid conspicuous streaks and add dimension, Chambers wisely prescribed a scattering of cool brown ribbons just a breath lighter than our own deep base. She folded in ten foils around our face and crown, then applied a rich gloss all over to blend the whole together.

What makes a blow-dryer the best tool for styling hair?

Cosmetic chemist Ginger King previously told Allure readers to look for heat-protecting products whose formulas feature ingredients like meadowfoam seed oil and VP/DMAPA acrylates copolymer. Familiar additives like aloe and argan oil help, too, sealing the hair cuticle for extra defense. And in the last few years, stars like Dwyane Wade, Megan Thee Stallion, and Saweetie have inspired us to consider our hair as a canvas for more than just blonde highlights or a chocolate brown gloss. After mixing up a deep gold formula, she used a comb to pick out whisper-thin threads around our face and crown, painting each piece and securing them with the sticky paper. Twenty-five minutes later, she removed the strips with warm water, revealing gorgeous, sunny glints that peeked through our dark hair with the slightest head turn. We crave a touch of sun-kissed color as much as the next Californian, but we told Capri that we were tired of our highlights always turning bright blonde outdoors, lightening our natural medium brown base. She offered the ideal solution by painting on a deep auburn dye, which darkened our existing highlights into warmer threads of cinnamon and copper. The results were so stunning, we've been basking in compliments ever since. Of course, that’s not to say you need an MFA to get the best red.

"Curly bangs are edgy on shorter hair and have a cool '80s look," says Saviano. The ultimate short haircut (and a great hard reset for tired strands), the buzz cut, is back and cooler than ever in 2024, says Toth — pointing to the likes of Lupita Nyong'o and even Harry Styles. A dramatic chop always feels like a new lease on life, but 2024’s short hair trends aren't exactly new. Last year was big on nostalgia — ‘80s curly fringe, ’90s pixie cuts, and Y2K layers. Those styles will still be populating your For You page in 2024, but you'll notice a sleeker, smoother, shinier finish.

She recommends making sure your hair is slicked back and as flat as possible for easy painting. You shouldn't wash these temporary designs out until you're ready to part with your fun hair. "You'll need your coloring products, a color-safe bowl, gloves, a brush for application, and smaller-sized paint brushes if you desire a specific design," Huerta shares.

It can be harder to find than someone who specializes in, say, balayage because colorists call their creations something different — or might not label them at all. We have long, buttery locks and a thing for keeping them that way. Instead, he brightened our faded blonde with a subtle display of champagne highlights, then applied a honeyed toner that made our hair sparkle. The glossy color looked so healthy and vibrant, we were shocked—in a good way. Although Jahanbigloo counts Julia Roberts and Ashley Judd as clients, she fit us into her schedule with remarkable ease.

We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal. Angela Trakoshis after using the Shark hair dryer and attachments with smooth, blown-out hair. Our team of expert stylists are passionate about hair and beauty. They stay up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques to provide you with the best service possible. Our stylists take the time to listen to your needs and preferences, and work with you to create a look that you'll love. How long you wait before washing out the dye depends on a few factors, including how vibrant you want the color and the directions that come with your hair dye, according to Zais and Huerta.

The look works on most face shapes but it’s especially striking on thicker hair that can show off the swingy shape. Take one part pixie and two parts bob — shaken, not stirred — muddle with a dash of punky attitude and what do you get? It's a little short on top and a little longer on the bottom — like a mullet but way chicer. "[Ask for] softer graduated layers — long length in the back and shorter layers framing the face," says New York City-based hairstylist Ty Holbrook.

Stress relieving scalp & neck massage followed by our signature Allure shampoo, precision haircut & style. To minimize heat damage, look for tools that feature multiple temperature settings because high heat isn't always necessary—especially for fine hair types. If you have the time, low heat is best for stymieing damage caused by heated hair tools, and don't forget to prep with a heat-protectant. You might already be using one, though, as many leave-in products include protective ingredients.

We always enlist a range of testers for any review, but hair-care products and tools are another story. While some can be used across different hair textures, lengths, curl patterns, thicknesses, colors (natural and unnatural), and concerns, many are created with specific consumers and their needs in mind. When reviewing tools, we also take into account testers’ experience levels.

She gently rebuffed our idea of an allover auburn shade, explaining that red fades quickly and requires constant upkeep. Instead, Jones proposed enhancing the natural russet in our dark hair with more manageable threads of cinnamon. The fiery glints solicited so many compliments, we might just have to get used to being the center of attention. "Lulu Liotta at Butterfly Loft" sounds like the beginning of a children's story.

Icon of the Seas Reveal What is included in a Cruise

cruise ship icon of the seas

It turns out that the aft is the stern of the ship, or, for those of us who don’t know what a stern or an aft are, its ass. The nose of the ship, responsible for separating the waves before it, is also called a bow, and is marked for passengers as the FWD, or forward. The part of the contemporary sailing vessel where the malls are clustered is called the midship.

A newstay-all-day neighborhood just for families

I believe that anyone who works for Royal Caribbean should be entitled to immediate American citizenship. They already speak English better than most of the passengers and, per the Serbian lady’s sales pitch above, better understand what America is as well. Crew members like my Panamanian cabin attendant seem to work 24 hours a day. A waiter from New Delhi tells me that his contract is six months and three weeks long. After a cruise ends, he says, “in a few hours, we start again for the next cruise.” At the end of the half a year at sea, he is allowed a two-to-three-month stay at home with his family.

SIGN UP TO STAY IN THE LOOP

In keeping with the family theme found throughout the ship, Icon of the Seas rooms are designed for groups. Half of the ship’s 28 cabin categories are new to the line, including the much-talked about three-level Ultimate Family Townhouse, which costs a cool $80,000 a week and includes a slide from the top level down. Deck 15 is home to AquaDome, one of Icon of the Seas’ new neighborhoods that’s housed within a 363-ton glass dome. The centerpiece is the AquaTheater, where the vertigo-inducing Aqua Show takes place. But other venues -- like Hooked Seafood, Celebration Table, AquaDome Marketplace and the weirdly cool Overlook Pods hangout areas – also bring AquaDome to life.

The largest waterpark at sea

Storm Chasers consists of falling from the “mast” down a long, twisting neon tube filled with water, like being the camera inside your own colonoscopy, as you hold on to the handles of a mat, hoping not to die. The tube then flops you down headfirst into a trough of water, a Royal Caribbean baptism. I also get reserved seating for a performance of The Wizard of Oz, an ice-skating tribute to the periodic table, and similar provocations. The very color of my Suite Sky SeaPass Card, an oceanic blue as opposed to the cloying royal purple of the standard non-Suite passenger, will soon provoke envy and admiration. But as high as my status may be, there are those on board who have much higher status still, and I will soon learn to bow before them.

cruise ship icon of the seas

Brace yourself for Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea with six record-breaking slides. Like the Frightening Bolt, the tallest waterslide to sail. And the Pressure Drop, the first open freefall waterslide on a cruise. Icon of the Seas has plenty of live music venues — including rowdy karaoke and dueling pianos bars, if that counts. But if you're a jazz fan or looking for a peaceful nightcap, none of these options will top the live music at Lou's Jazz 'n Blues. Turn up bold adventures at some of the most beautiful destinations in the Western Caribbean.

At the infinity pool on Deck 17, I spot some elderly women who could be ethnic and from my part of the world, and so I jump in. Many of them seem to be originally from Queens (“Corona was still great when it was all Italian”), though they are now spread across the tristate area. We bond over the way “Ron-kon-koma” sounds when announced in Penn Station.

Icon of the Seas Deck Plan Emphasizes Immersive Neighborhoods, Including New Options

Finding your crew’s just-right space is easy, with more rooms designed for families. On the new Icon of the Seas℠, where you stay is just as thrilling as how you play. From expansive balconies that invite the sea breeze to our most over-the-top family accommodations — our range of spacious rooms is designed with family comfort in mind. Bond over new bites
and toast to next-level nightlife.

I trust that you have enjoyed this nautical lesson. Icon of the Seas℠ brings on the most thrilling Western Caribbean adventures for the whole family. Plenty of family-friendly cruise ships have waterslides, but few have six — or even one that requires a multi-person raft. Now that you know all of the wonderful entertainment, attractions, dining and more that is complimentary on Icon of the Seas, what is not included in your cruise fare? The following restaurants and attractions are open to guests sailing onboard Icon of the Seas, but you'll have to pay an additional fee to access them.

MEET THE ICON OF VACATIONS

There’s the AquaDome, where one can find a food hall and an acrobatic sound-and-light aquatic show. Central Park has a premium steak house, a sushi joint, and a used Rolex that can be bought for $8,000 on land here proudly offered at $17,000. There’s the aforementioned Royal Promenade, where I had drunk with the Rands, and where a pair of dueling pianos duel well into the night. There’s Surfside, a kids’ neighborhood full of sugary garbage, which looks out onto the frothy trail that the behemoth leaves behind itself.

The variety of rooms onboard Icon of the Seas is impressive, with more than 80% offering beds for three passengers or more. Cabins are made for families, though storage space ultimately could be an issue with larger groups, especially with more standard accommodations. Before the cruise is finished, I talk to Mr. Washy Washy, or Nielbert of the Philippines. He is a sweet, gentle man, and I thank him for the earworm of a song he has given me and for keeping us safe from the dreaded norovirus.

As a ship made for families, Icon of the Seas primarily attracts cruisers traveling with children – 82% of the cabins can hold three guests or more. Most passengers will be from North America, but given that the ship sails from Miami – a destination known for international tourism – it won’t be uncommon for Icon of the Seas to attract global passengers. The Windjammer Marketplace is a win; the company has managed to create a buffet with excellent options (including those for people with allergies) and an efficient layout that moves people through effectively.

It makes no sense on sea, or on land, or in outer space. It looks like a hodgepodge of domes and minarets, tubes and canopies, like Istanbul had it been designed by idiots. Vibrant, oversignifying colors are stacked upon other such colors, decks perched over still more decks; the only comfort is a row of lifeboats ringing its perimeter. There is no imposed order, no cogent thought, and, for those who do not harbor a totalitarian sense of gigantomania, no visual mercy. This is the biggest cruise ship ever built, and I have been tasked with witnessing its inaugural voyage.

Icon of the Seas Cruise Ships Royal Caribbean Cruises

cruise ship icon of the seas

When the sun goes down, your night lights up with possibilities. From performances that push the bounds of bravery to mixology magic against a background of wraparound ocean views — icons don’t just steal the show, they change the way you see it forever. Now that you know everything that's included in your Icon of the Seas cruise, you can start planning an unforgettable escape on the first-ever Icon Class cruise ship. As I slink back to the ship after my brief jailbreak, the locals stand under umbrellas to gaze at and photograph the boat that towers over their small capital city.

Category 6 waterpark

The world’s largest ship delivered on its promise. For more than a year before Icon of the Seas launched, Royal Caribbean ran a marketing campaign unlike any we’d ever seen, with flashy messaging promising a ship filled with family fun, thrills and incredible choice. I usually tan very evenly, but something about the discombobulation of life at sea makes me forget the regular application of sunscreen. As I walk down the streets of Charlotte Amalie in my fluorescent Icon of the Seas cap, an old Rastafarian stares me down. In keeping with the aquatic theme, I attend a show at the AquaDome.

The six-slide waterpark

The women are equally un-shy about their sprawling physiques. Finally, I visit a comedy revue in an enormous and too brightly lit version of an “intimate,” per Royal Caribbean literature, “Manhattan comedy club.” Many of the jokes are about the cruising life. “I’ve lived on ships for 20 years,” one of the middle-aged comedians says. “I can only see so many Filipino homosexuals dressed as a taco.” He pauses while the audience laughs. He segues into a Trump impression and then Biden falling asleep at the microphone, which gets the most laughs. As I fall asleep that night, I realize another connection I have failed to make, and one that may explain some of the diversity on this vessel—many of its passengers have served in the military.

Sails To

I could not understand English well enough then to catch the nuances of that seafaring program, but I knew that there were differences in the status of the passengers, and that sometimes those differences made them sad. Still, this ship, this plenty—every few steps, there are complimentary nachos or milkshakes or gyros on offer—was the fatty fuel of my childhood dreams. Icon of the Seas’ true wow factor, however, is arguably found on its upper decks, where the ship’s multigenerational family focus shines brightest. Nevermind that the area is home to multiple pools and more than a dozen bars and eateries; some of Icon of the Seas’ most emblematic attractions are found here.

Even a Pinnacle needs to be a Suite to access this level of corned-beef hash. I put on my meatball T-shirt and head for one of the dining rooms to get a late lunch. In the elevator, I stick out my chest for all to read the funny legend upon it, but soon I realize that despite its burnished tricolor letters, no one takes note.

Later, I look him up, and it appears that on land, he’s a financial adviser in a crisp gray suit, probably a pillar of his North Chicago community. “They asked me three times if I needed medication,” he says of the security people who apparently interrogated him in full view of others having breakfast. As a coddled passenger with a suite, I feel like I am starting to understand what it means to have a rank and be constantly reminded of it. There are many espresso makers, I think as I look across the expanse of my officer-grade quarters before closing my eyes, but this one is mine. “We’re just baby Pinnacles,” Mrs. Palo Alto tells me, describing a kind of internal class struggle among the Pinnacle elite for ever higher status.

Icon of the Seas Rooms Have Categories for All Family Sizes

To the sound of “Live and Let Die,” a man in a harness gyrates to and fro in the sultry air. I saw something very similar in the back rooms of the famed Berghain club in early-aughts Berlin. Soon another harnessed man is gyrating next to the first. But the show soon devolves into the usual Marvel-film-grade nonsense, with too much light and sound signifying nichts. If any fisting is happening, it is probably in the Suite Neighborhood, inside a cabin marked with an upside-down pineapple, which I understand means a couple are ready to swing, and I will see none of it.

cruise ship icon of the seas

I say hurtfully because as a Suite passenger I should be here, though my particular suite is far from the others. Whereas I am stuck amid the riffraff of Deck 11, this section is on the highborn Decks 16 and 17, and in passing, I peek into the spacious, tall-ceilinged staterooms from the hallway, dazzled by the glint of the waves and sun. For $75,000, one multifloor suite even comes with its own slide between floors, so that a family may enjoy this particular terror in private.

“This is very important to me, getting people to wash their hands,” he tells me in his burger getup. He has dreams, as an artist and a performer, but they are limited in scope. One day he wants to dress up as a piece of bacon for the morning shift. Another hot-tub denizen suggests that he should have asked for fentanyl. After a few more drinks, Duck Necklace begins to muse about what it would be like to fall off the ship.

Marvel at lush tropical jungles in Roatán, trek through Mayan ruins in Cozumel — and brave the tallest waterslide in North America at our gamechanging private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Wondering which restaurants are free on Icon of the Seas? There are several dining options where every bite is complimentary. This includes the casual, family-friendly Surfside Eatery buffet and Surfside Bites, your go-to for sweet and salty snacks.

Each pool has its own unique vibe, and every one is free for cruise guests (though one is exclusively for Suite Guests…more on that later). So let’s take a tour of all the picture-perfect places to plunge. First stop is the Hideaway Pool — the only suspended infinity pool at sea, you can soak up ocean views surrounded by a multilevel sun terrace with its own resident DJ, whirlpools, a variety of seating and a dedicated bar. Then there's Royal Bay, the largest pool at sea with over 40,000 gallons of water, plenty of in-water loungers and raised whirlpools that offer beautiful ocean views. — grab a seat at Swim & Tonic, the first swim-up bar in the Royal Caribbean® fleet. Water's Edge Pool has everything families need to make a splash with the little ones right in the heart of Surfside.

As of 2019, the median income for crew members was somewhere in the vicinity of $20,000, according to a major business publication. Royal Caribbean would not share the current median salary for its crew members, but I am certain that it amounts to a fraction of the cost of a Royal Bling gold-plated, zirconia-studded chalice. Pinnacles, it is explained to me over translucent cantaloupe, have sailed with Royal Caribbean for 700 ungodly nights. Pandemic Pinnacles took advantage of the two-for-one accrual rate of Pinnacle points during the pandemic, when sailing on a cruise ship was even more ill-advised, to catapult themselves into Pinnacle status.

There is, however, a clientele for whom this cruise makes perfect sense. Cruise ships have become, for a certain kind of hardworking family, a form of subsidized child care. Because of the importance of the inaugural voyage of the world’s largest cruise liner, more than 200 Pinnacles are on this ship, a startling number, it seems. Mrs. Palo Alto takes out a golden badge that I have seen affixed over many a breast, which reads CROWN AND ANCHOR SOCIETY along with her name. “You should hear all the whining in Guest Services,” her husband tells me. Apparently, the Pinnacles who are not also Suites like us are all trying to use their status to get into Coastal Kitchen, our elite restaurant.

Plus, stops to Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas – on every sailing. Amanda has written for Royal Caribbean since 2017.
